Happy Hens

Last week, I headed off to town to pick up some hens, to come and live in my lovely new henhouse.  I bought 6 young hens, about 20 weeks old, and was told they were just beginning to lay.  They've been shut in for about 5 days, so that they could learn where to lay, how to roost, and to settle into their new home.

Here are the girls in their new digs ............................................
Today I thought I'd let them out, as the sun has decided to come back after a very wet Monday.  And look what I found - my first egg - doesn't take much to get me excited does it?  I've left it there for the kids to find when they get home from school.  They've been running out to check the nesting boxes every day so today they'll get a surprise too!

Anyway, I opened their little door, and waited.........

....................and waited ................

...................and waited...........................................

............... and finally they ventured out.

They're staying pretty close to the door just now, but I'm sure it won't be long and they'll be roaming around, probably getting into the vegetable garden and harassing the dog.

TIme for some more Tis the Season progress, I've joined the blocks together, and have now chosen my border fabrics, might get them on tonight if time allows, so I'm still on target to finish it before the end of the month.

Thanks for visiting with me today ...................... till next time................happy stitching, Nicky

Gorgeous chooks! but I have a little bad news for you, they will go and find their own favourite spots to lay and mine change their spot about every fortnight LOL. They look like what are called Isa Browns over here in Australia. I have been enjoying your blog for a while now and found it via the Vignette blog. Your quilts etc are just amazing.

I am watching the progress of your chickens ( and henhouse )closely as I have my order in for my henhouse . I have only been waiting 30 + years to get them. I really hope it happens this time as we love producing our own food.
# 1 egg - that's great - I hope you get lots.
As I expected they have said Saturday for avo picking - that clashes nicely with our quilt exhibition.( murphy's law says if it can clash it probably will.)Never mind I will work round it.qu

Seeing that first egg must have been pretty exciting! Are you planning to bronze it and display it like a Fabergé egg? ;-)

The quilt just looks stunning!

I would be running around all excited by the first egg, too, Nicky! I'm the same way--I don't need much to make me happy :)

I love seeing all the blocks of your quilt together--just wonderful!

Your hens are so sweet! I love how they had to poke their heads out of the house for a while before they were brave enough to come out properly.

Lovely quilt blocks too.

I just love your hen house Nicky. I still get excited to hear how many eggs we get each day even after 2 years of having them. They are a lot of fun and the eggs are so much better than store bought ones.

How neat! It seems like so many people are getting into having hens--really neat! I love your quilt progress, too.

I was talking to a neighbor about her sons and thought of you. One of her sons was 6 months away from being fully qualified as an electrician when the company he was working for let him go--a common practice here because then they'd be required to pay him more money. He went off to travel and ended up in NZ, where he's working now and LOVES it. Says it's the most fabulous place. He was at the game that Ireland won recently so was incredibly excited. Anyway, I thought of you because rugby and NZ = Nicky in my head! ;)

Have a great week!
